# Dr. Zoé R. Fortier

Child and family psychologist

Dr. Fortier provides psychotherapy to young children and works closely with the adults who care for them. Her approach centres on play, emotions, development, and relationships, with attention to what a child’s behaviour may be communicating and to the experience of the family around them.

## Who she supports

Dr. Fortier works with children from infancy to age 12, as well as their parents and caregivers. Families may seek her help when a child is experiencing anxiety, outbursts, opposition, withdrawal, emotional difficulties, challenging behaviour, or strain in the parent-child relationship.

Rather than focusing only on the behaviour itself, she works with families to understand what the child may be experiencing and what may be contributing to the difficulty. She also makes space for the questions, uncertainty, and challenges that parents and caregivers may be facing.

## Approach

Dr. Fortier provides child and family psychotherapy informed by developmental, attachment, and humanistic perspectives, as well as Synergetic Play Therapy and Circle of Security Parenting.

She typically meets with parents or caregivers first to understand the child’s development, relationships, and family history. Psychotherapy may include play-based sessions with the child, parental guidance, or sessions involving the child and caregiver together.

Play gives children a developmentally appropriate way to communicate and work through experiences and emotions that may be difficult to express in words. Meetings with parents and caregivers provide space to better understand the child’s needs, reflect on responses at home, and consider ways of supporting the relationship.

Caregiver participation and the child’s willing engagement are important parts of the process.

This service does not include assessments of attention, learning, or neurodevelopmental conditions, or family mediation.

## Background

Dr. Fortier holds a clinical doctorate in child psychology and continues to develop her practice through ongoing training, reading, and supervision. She places particular importance on attentive presence and on building a trusting relationship with each child and family.

She is a co-founder of Clinique VIA.
